Improving CDSS (Clinical Decision Support Systems) in Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
“Crohn’s disease [CD] is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] that can result in progressive bowel damage and disability. CD can affect individuals of any age, from children to the elderly, and may cause significant morbidity and impact on quality of life. Up to one-third of patients present with complicated behaviour [strictures, fistula, or abscesses] at diagnosis. Most patients over time will develop a complication, with roughly 50% of patients requiring surgery within 10 years of diagnosis. As the precise aetiology of CD remains unknown, a curative therapy is not yet available. Several agents are available for the medical treatment of CD.” (ECCO Guidelines on Therapeutics in Crohn’s Disease (2019))
IBD therapy is quite challenging for HCPs and patients. The arsenal of drugs is broad and complex with even more treatment options becoming available in the next years. With the amount of available and upcoming treatments and complexities in IBD, it begs the following questions:
- Which patients will benefit the most from which therapy?
- Which patient habits/behaviors are linked to better outcomes?
- How can we predict and even prevent flare-ups?
Many solutions are under way, but mostly early stage and not compatible with the German healthcare system. Others are just digital Apps without groundbreaking benefits and features.
Focus on solutions for HCPs like family doctors and Gastroenterologists. But in terms of shared decision making, please always have the patient in mind.

What we are looking for:
Takeda doesn’t want to limit the ideas. Any innovative solution will be welcome.
So here are fruits for thoughts: Takeda is searching for solutions that improve the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) by integrating various sources of information (including EHR) and using ML/AI to support HCPs in providing personalized treatment. An example could be an algorithmn for aggregated data sourced from wearables, smartphones and elsewhere that predicts flares. Such a solution could prompt HCPs to intervene early and prevent a worsening of the condition. Another approach could be a solution that aids HCPs in diagnosing and stratifying patients to enable better treatment decisions (initiation, change/adjustment, etc.).
FAQ
Who can apply?
Incorporated companies with a product or technology that addresses the challenges released. At least, a prototype of the solution should exist. There are no further specific requirements in terms of Technology Readiness Level (TLR), sales, minimum investment attracted, or country of registration.
European and non-European SMEs are invited to apply.
How can I apply to this challenge?
Click on „Apply now“ and follow the instructions to submit an application. You will answer different questions about your company and the product you present as a possible solution to the challenge.
How are applications evaluated?
The main selection criteria is product-challenge fit. Applications are sent to the relevant teams in each challenge-owner, who decide which companies are selected. To increase the chances of a successful application, make sure you carefully read the information we have published about each challenge and show in your application how your product could be a perfect match. The questions in the application will guide you!
Can I apply to more than one challenge?
Yes, of course! However, you will need to submit one individual application per challenge and customize it according to the challenge.
I have a solution for a challenge, but it still requires some changes or development. Can I still apply?
Yes, the main requirement is that your solution addresses the challenge. In case you are selected, during the meetings with the challenge owners, you can clarify the needs of both parties and decide on possible changes/modifications/extra features, etc.
We encourage you to apply even if your solution only fulfills some of the requirements of the „ideal solution“ described above. Both off-the-shelf and customizable options are relevant!
Where does Start-ups Meet Pharma take place?
Mostly online, with the possibility to organize meetings in person in the Meet&Visit module.
What is the cost for my company?
None, it is completely free of charge. No fee, no equity taken. You only need to bring professionalism and commitment to make the best out of this opportunity.
Is a collaboration 100% secured for the SMEs selected?

However, we guarantee 100% of the selected companies will be connected to the relevant teams within the challenge-owner, will have 1-on-1 partnership exploration meetings, and will receive support to prepare for that occasion in the best possible way.
My product or solution is not a fit for any of the challenges… what can I do?
